Youth programs

YMCA Youth programs promote the positive development of young people through activities and experiences that address the developmental assets that all youth need to obtain: social, emotional, physical, and cognitive competencies.  Whether in youth sports or one of the many other programs, the YMCA is here to provide an environment where area youth can feel safe, have fun and build trusting relationships.

Spring I programs: 
Busy Bodies (limited to 10 children)
Instructor: Paula Dyer
A class for parents and children to enjoy structured gross and fine motor activities, songs and finger play while learning colors, shapes and names.  Some free play time provides opportunity to meet other parents.  
Ages 1.5-2: Thursday; 9:00-9:45am
Ages 3-4: Thursday; 10:00-10:45am

Tumble & Cheer (Ages 10+)
Instructor: Julie Rose Jarrett
This class combines tumbling and basic cheerleading skills as a progression into formal cheer.
Saturday; Noon-12:45pm

Kung Fu Kids
Instructor: Si Fu Craig Taylor, 2nd degree black belt
This martial arts form for children will increase physical fitness, team building skills and mental concentration. Children will also work on understanding respect and taking responsibility for themselves.
Ages 5-8: Tuesday  6:45-7:15pm
Ages 9-12: Tuesday  7:15-7:45pm

Swim & Gym (Ages 3.5-7)
Instructor: Suzanne Rickard                                           
This movement class emphasizes motor skill development and fitness through fun physical activity.  The gym portion is followed by a 30 minute swim lesson. 
Gym: Friday; 9:30-10:15am   
Swim: Friday; 10:30-11:00am

Fee:  $35 Members $120 Non-Members

Music and Movement (Ages 18mos - 3yrs)
Instructor: Becky Tanguay
Participants will learn songs and activities that encourage development. The class will sing, dance and  use musical instruments provided by the instructor. The toddler class is an interactive experience for parent and children.
Wednesday; 10:15-11am

Tumble/Nastics
Instructor: Julie-Rose Jarrett
Youth in the beginner and intermediate class will learn the fundamentals of stunts and tumbling and lead-up skills consisting of cartwheels, handstands, leaps, forward and backward rolls, and balance beam work. Participants in the older class will learn more advanced moves and floor routines.
Ages 4-6: Thursday 3:45-4:30pm
Ages 7-9: Thursday 4:30-5:15pm

Preschool Dance (Ages 3-5)
Instructor: Julie Rose Jarrett
This exciting class introduces preschoolers to dance & rhythmical movements.
Saturday; 8:30-9:15am

Youth Dance (Ages 6-10)
Instructor: Julie Rose Jarrett
Children learn the basic dance techniques of ballet and tap combining rhythm, coordination, timing and style with choreographed routines.
Saturday; 9:15-10:00am

Youth Fitness (Ages 8-12)
Structured classes using games and activities to promote fitness and improve strength, endurance and self-esteem.
Tuesday; 4:30-5:30pm
Note: Sign up for a swim class at 5:30 for only $23 for a fun land & water program. FREE to members.

Hula-Hoop Making Workshop (Ages 13+)
April 3rd   10am-11:30am
Hula Hooping is a great activity for sports conditioning, general fitness, and fun. This workshop provides instruction in making a personal hula-hoop; learn hula-hoop movements and simple tricks. Hula Hooping is back and sure to be fun for the whole family. 
Fee:  $15

Teddy Bear Pillows (Ages 6-12)
Instructor: Jane Garnsey
Make a keepsake pillow from a pattern and vintage fabric or bring your old “Blankie”. A lesson in simple hand stitching and embroidery will give your bear personality. 
Friday; 4:00-5:00pm
Fee: Members: $25 (includes fabric and materials)

Young Explorers (Ages 4-5)
Instructor: Paula Dyer
This is a hands-on class focusing on early childhood math and science experiences.  The children will study topics such as mixing colors, the 5 senses, bubbles, magnets and ice and water.  Activities will include patterning, matching, making graphs and lots of fun and messy experiments. It is recommended participants wear play clothes or a smock.

Tales & Creations (Ages 3-5)
Instructor: Debbie Theobald
Following the reading of a book, children will participate in an activity inspired by the story (craft, song or game).

Signs for Babies (3-18mos)
Instructor: Patti Frohloff, PHD
Babies introduced to sign language can communicate their needs as early as 6 months old. Join a fun class for parents and babies as we explore Signs that will get you on your way to communicating with your little one.

Birth Order and It’s Meaning in Life
Instructor: Cindy Simon
Learn how birth order influences decisions, relationships, job choices, parenting and marriage.  Improve communication skills, gain an understanding of yourself and family members and identify destructive habits by learning how the position in the family affects behaviors and personality.  FREE to members.
Wednesday, April 21;   6:30-8:30pm

Community Playgroup (Ages 0-3 years)
Join us for a FREE playgroup for children ages birth to 3 years old and their caregivers.  The playgroup will incorporate developmentally appropriate activities that will challenge and promote social-emotional, physical and intellectual learning.  Activities may include cooking, arts and crafts  and tumbling.
1st & 3rd Wednesday; 10:30am-Noon
